Almost up to date with foal culling! Can't believe it!
  • Oh my gosh I just snipped, named, and moved my last un-looked-at colt into a show pony barn. I haven't had all my colts culled in months and months! Think I have about 75 fillies to do, another sweep through/reorganization of pastures and then, gasp, I can start breeding again!

Of course, suddenly I seem to have about 40 intact gen 4 stallions (my herd has really taken a leap forward in quality there with 3 *stars and a handful of As that compare AGA my gen 5 *stwr benchmark) so there is some more work to be done there too, but I'm feeling very stoked that I will be able to catch up this season, at least breed my old outgoing boys to pastures and still have time to sort and cull those foals before Feb so in Feb I can do a full on breed again! Yay!

Anyone else suffering the too many foals woes with me?
  • Congratulations! And how many mares do you have now? I've got about 2k horses total, including show ponies, and I think 700 mares including foals, foundation and lined, and public breeders.

I'm doing a bunch of housecleaning chores before pastures this year, too. :P like actually assigning new mares to pasture studs, and going through the mares I marked when I papered them to see how well they're doing, and revaluating some mares whose gene combinations I can't really use anymore. :)
That and I never really put up my public breeders for brood anymore, so I'll either stick them in my show herds or the auction or something. :D
I do have a few new studs I'm happy about and I think I'm starting to look at a Fifth generation coming into my barns. :P
  • I have over 2700 intact mares, but I only have 2200 of breeding age. I have 1900 in pasture so I actually may get most of my breeding age girls into pastures this season once I finish culling and do some reorganization. I have decided anything that I can't squeeze into pastures is going to be come a Recip Mare since that herd is getting older and aging out, so I will officially be caught up with mare rotation too, I hope!

I am also thinking about culling/redistributing some lines. I've decided to focus on fantasy and GP lines I think...still on the fence on Snowflake. I am also seriously considering closing my herd... But I have a couple months before I'm ready to implement all of those decisions.
  • Congratulations! That is a lot of work and time. Yet the fruits of your labor are already showing themselves in the high quality horses you are producing. Keep up the great work. :D
