What should I call my new line?
-
Obviously I can't call them percherons but I'd like something simular or that represents them.
This won't be my breed name just this one line----

You could call them SaltandPepper Drafts. :DDe gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Big Stompy Feets! : )
They originated in France, so maybe "French Inspired" or "Provencal Influenced"? A quick google search did find me the coat of arms that was used by the former province of Perche. It was a red and white chevron, so that may be a tattoo idea. -
Big stompy feet :)) these names were to cute I'll get on Google to look some ideas up----
Barn ID 4953 -
How do you just call a line?
-
It's what I'll name their tattoo as well as call them whenever I talk about them on the forum
I was going to try to go with "big stompy feet" mixed with grey horse but didn't like the French word for feet
Then I had "sabot de cheval gris" or grey horse hoof but also way to long. So I'm going to settle on "gris cheval de trait"
Grey draft horse----

Sweet. I am excited to see what jyou do with this line.
-
Found this on the percheron association of America
" black or grey, but there are also sorrels, bays, roans, etc. Many Percherons have white markings on the head and feet, but excessive white is undesirable. Percherons range in height from 15 to 19 hands high, most are between 16-2 and 17-3 hands high"
Gives me a lot of lean-way to work with on both color and size. I couldn't find anything on bone weight. Also couldn't find any other forgein associations to maybe add more requirements and up the difficulty
I think to make it more of a challenge I am going to limit myself to black, grey, dark bay/brown and blue roan. I don't want it to be to easy.
Especially since Best friend has a whole tray of requirements for her Shire line :-\"
Sorry for the long winded reply. Wanted to get this down to look back on later----

I'm cleaning out a barn and will breeding the first "Gris Cheval de Trait" horses tonight or tomorrow----

Hey guys, I just realised.
I have almost every single copy of Horse Sense. They're a series of magazines released in NZ and Australia (don't know if anywhere else) and they include information about many many breeds. I could check to see what they say about Percherons if you want.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

That'd be fantastic!
See what they say about Shires as well----

Ok, found them! Took longer because my stepdad had rearranged the garage (again) but found them both. I'm just going to skip the intro bit and appearance and get to height and colour.
Percheron:
Height: Mares are 16.1 and over and stallions are no less than 16.3 hands
Colour: Grey or black. (The picture shows a dappled horse, so I presume dappling is ok.)
Shire:
Mentions they come from Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire (the Midlands).
Height: Mares are 16hands and over, geldings are 16.2 and over and stallions are from 17 hands upward.
Colour: Black, brown, bay or grey with plenty of white on the feet and legs.
Anyone got any other orders?Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
Can we use the name or region where they come from? -
I was told that it may not be acceptable, but if you start mashing places together that might do.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

I know shires were used also ad war horses.
-
Warwick would be a great line name. I looked it up to make sure it wasn't a real breed and it's just a place. You should be okay to name your line off of a specific place----
Barn ID 4953 -
Warwick is what i was thinking. They are such a versatile breed.
-
They are indeed. I think warwick is a great name. Could even give the name to your favorite foundation sire----
Barn ID 4953 -
Breed names are unique to your barn. Any horse you create or breed will noted as a member of your individual breed. Your breed, however, cannot be a real breed or from a real place. They must be a work of pure fiction.
Taken from the FAQ, so I dunno if Warwick would be allowed if it is a place.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

It's not a breed name just a line name. But you may be right----

I wonder if Warwickian would work?
-
Apparently that is a rugby union xD Someone suggested to me to use a local goddess of the area where the name of the place I was going to use was called after, so maybe looking into celtic gods and goddess may help? Thought their names can be kinda funny...Gah, coming up with names is so hard >.<Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Yeah and my names are plain.
-
I used to be good a funding cool name but lacking now.
If Warwickian smdont work than try looking up words that describe or remind you of the breed. Take the words and put them in translate. Not sure what country they originate from but try that as the language to translate too.
Percheron are from france so I used french----

You might get away with Wickshire, but Warwick would definitely not pass, in my opinion.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Wickshire is still a great name. Reminds me of LotR----
