Culling foundation mares?
  • How do you all decide how to cull the foundations? I am mainly wanting to look at my mares. I really have no idea how to start this.

Next season I am only breeding my RS mares. I have a RS stud that I am going to use.

Dancers offspring wont be ready for a while. So wanting to breed strictly RS to RS.

How do you all cull them out. I know one way is AFPT but I am not sure if all of my mares have had 3 foals a piece.

Is there some other ways to cull? Right now culling by color wont work because i am wanting to do quality and sure what colors I really want to try for since I like all colors.
  • Possible tactics for you:

1--run everything through Consistency test with AutoSpay on. All of your RS and PF horses will pass Consistency, so no worries about accidentally testing them.

2--if you can, Paper any mares with 3 living foals. Cull anything that is Failed. Consider culling Yellows, especially if you have lots of Reds.

3--if you have maintained records on snipped foals (or kept them in your show herd), consider culling mares that have given you all or mostly snipped foals. Look at everybody's family page if you've been keeping show ponies.

4--for the mares that HAVE 3 or more PTd foals, go ahead and cull them on AFPT. Pick your cutoff and cull any mare that has dropped below that.

  • Cheers i was thinking about an AFPT scord of at least 10? Am i thinking right on that?

Based off of consistent testing only 7 mares tested inconsistent. One of them has an AFPT score of 10.2 out of 5 foals. So not sure what to do now?
  • I require my foundation mares to have an AFPT of 10.0 but there is no right or wrong answer there!
  • Right now i have one mare that has an afpt of 9.9. She is 15 so just gonna remove her. I dont see how you do it? 1000 of hotses to go through must take some time.

Right now i am dealing with about 100 foundation mares.

  • I've gotten through about 75 foals and their moms today in 15 or 20 horse batches. But yeah, it's pretty time consuming. I'm considering trying a new system that's not as time intensive but not sure what it might be....
  • Do you keep any inconsistent mares? This particular mare has thrown 10 or higher PT on her foals?
  • I don't tend to keep them, though I know I have some who slipped through the cracks when I accidentally turned autospay off. But if you have the odd favorite, that's up to you. Just remember that inconsistency can significantly pull down your PT scores (by half a point or more in my experience) which can make a huge difference if you are culling on PT or AFPT.
  • Right now I am culling on consistency and afpt scores? I took her out when i started thinking about more.
  • I'd never have time to go through them all, normal creates I just use a couple times and them let them be show ponies. If you are only using RS mares from now, on I'd remove all your other foundation mares from the breeding herd (by either selling or retiring to a show barn). Just keep a few favourites, At least you know the quality of RS, perfect foundations or hanjic rescues
  • Trying to get my herd in some kind of organization. I know it takes time but hoping to cross dancers onto my rs foals.

Eventually i know i will have to decide on what genes. Right now i want to try them all till i decide.
