Question About Breeding
  • So I have this mare who foaled just under a week ago. I tested her for consistency, and she came up inconsistent and was spayed. Her foal also came up inconsistent. Are the two things related? Or just bad luck?

Also I know that I should have tested her before I bread her.

  • I honestly don't know the answer to this question...perhaps one of the older players does.

As far as I know inconsistency does not directly affect breeding ability, only showing ability. While I do require my horses to be consistent to remain as breeders, this is more because I put a large number of foals on the ground each season and need the extra way to cull numbers. Consistency DOES directly affect Performance Test scores and can be a factor in Strict Mare Advice results.

I do know that my stock has passed Consistency but still produce inconsistent foals.

I also know that horses that pass Consistency still have a range of +/-2 in their show scores but I think perfectly consistent horses have no range...
  • Yes. Consistency is inheritable.
