GM of lined horses
-
ok, so I have done a little bit of gm on horses before, 2 times with founds and once with something that normally would be only one token anyway, and always with seen alleles.
I have this stallion I would like to use as a 2g from my het GP mare.
I have heard that with lined horses all GM are 1 GMT. Would that work with GP to ensure he has it? Also since he might have gotten it from his mother, his father doesn't have it, but there is no way of knowing if he does, how does that work? Is this something that can be done? I'm also trying to decide if it is worth it for a demoted generation horse. -
Ok, this is purely my opinion.
He's an inferior gen 3 stallion that MAY be het for GP through his dam line. Other than the possible GP he has nothing extra special going on. And he's a foal, it's not like you're debating GMTing him to use this season.
I would not GMT him, I would hope you could breed or buy or acquire straws to a superior evenly bred gen 2 stallion for your mare(S), possibly even a homozygous one. I assume you have at least two seasons to make that happen, and Christmas is coming...
As far as I know the answer to the rest of your questions is yes, it would only cost 1 GMT to add the GP if he missed it. No you can't tell now, you would just try to modify him and it would either take your token or it would tell you you couldn't modify this gene (indicating he already has it on his dam's side and of course you can't add it for the sires side).
I try to only GMT the cream of my crop...it's way too expensive to waste real money on inferior breeders in my opinion. -
Yeah I should say I haven't tried. I've added Kit genes to possible KP horses but never tried GP, KP or DP I don't think.
-
If the horse is not a Foundation, you can only GMT the horse to have something the sire or dame has.
-
The dam is a GP carrier.
-
I just looked at the filly below, when I go under add DP (her sire is a carrier) it says
"Your horse has the ? allele for this Dense Pheomelanin gene.
Dense Pheomelanin is an untestable gene. You will always see the option to modify on an untestable gene but will only be charged if that horse does not already have that gene. No edits are available for this gene"
So I assume it's not something you can add. Which makes sense.

Thanks friends. Good to know. Also come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be worth GMTing the boy even if I could. I'll have to admit I am a little struck by color. Even without the possible GP I wish my other stallions were EE Sooty Sooty duns, but there is the color I'm breeding for, and then there's the colors of the boys with the best quality that get kept. lol. If he was equal to my top 2g boys that would help my argument, but he is just slightly worse even though he still tests AGA. Thanks for talking some sense into me.
