Pastures
  • Right now I have my foundation's in there. My question is should they stay put until my G2 foals from dancer are ready? Or should I go ahead and put my G2 horses in the padture?
  • That is totally up to you.

Each member uses their pastures a little differently, but I think the typical practice is to put same generation horses in and breed them to a same generation stallion. When that breeding is done, the horses are moved back to the stables and a different generation is put in.

In your case, that would mean breeding your foundation horses then moving them back to the stables to make room for your second generation horses.

Though I have heard of members breeding their foundation mares with second generation stallions (with second generation mares also in the pasture) to get show horses.

    :)
  • I want to make his line more of a great quality producing line. This is hard. I have a few of his daughters ready to breed next month. I want to bring his line forward like some of the other lines I have heard of. I want his line known like that as well.
  • Best friend, both of those things take time.

If you can, I would suggest investing in a pasture. Ammit has some pretty great deals going on for the holiday season.

If that isn't possible at the moment, I might suggest focusing on getting foals on the ground because, if your talking about Halloween Dancer, I think he doesn't have many seasons left. Since testing mare quality is difficult, I would try to get a lot of intact fillies so that when you breed them - after three foals - you can check their papering score.

I would also suggest stocking up on Halloween Dancer straws if you are worried about missing out on foals now.
  • Yes I am talking about Halloween Dancer. I have some straws but not a lot. He has for me at least produced more colts than fillies. I know this takes time just not sure how to proceed ahead.

I know right now another pasture would be handy. I am not able to do that. Trying to figure out how to go ahead in his line.

He produced so far 5 superior sons to him. Just not sure what to do with the remaining superior sons.
  • Best friend, that is a significant progression in your breeding! Five superior colts is a lot and they will do well to produce the next generation of Halloween Dancer's bloodline.

Now you can start looking for fillies to breed those colts to. If you line breed, you can always geld the excess colts and keep them as show horses. If you want to avoid inbreeding, you can always keep all the superior colts intact and use them in alternating seasons.
  • Didn't think of that. That's a good idea.
  • 2 of them are brothers. So should I keep both?
  • Um, I don't know about moving mares in and out of the pastures....you lose the pasture breeding bonus if they are taken out for any length of time. I have different categories of pastures; S+ and Sooty, Foundation Liver, Foundation Chestnut, 2g Liver, one with all Fuel to the Fire mares, etc. I move the stallions around, but the mares stay put. They get the first part of the bonus at 15 days and the full bonus after 30.

Moving them from one pasture directly to another is ok, though.

  • Best--if you only have a very few gen 2 mares ready to breed in this line, I would probably keep your foundations in pasture this season in the hopes that Dancer makes it through roll over and can give you another pasture full of foals. This is obviously a gamble, but it sounds like you have a better chance of getting a high number of foals with the full pasture bonus that way than if you rotate out your mares now.

With any luck you could breed your foundations on the first day of pasture breeding, pull them out and put in your gen 2s, breed them 15 days later with the half bonus and then evaluate where you go from there.

  • I was starting to think that to. I am hoping he passes through to next year. Maybe I will get more fillies by him.
  • You might get GMTs from your SS and you could use a couple to change one of those superior colts to fillies.

  • I like that idea a lot. I already know which one I would do. One of the brothers that I have.
