Snowflake
  • http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=578884

    This colt is LlpLlpPatrn1Patrn1

What is the right combo for snowflake? When I went to the snowflake breeder club he can't be put in it.

That is his sire. To be homozygous appy what am I missing?
  • Snowflake is a whole different gene it doesnt just have to do with lp and patn1 :)

It was a LE gene that you had to pay money to put on. And now it can sometimes be randomly created in foundations. I'm pretty sure it will be available again around christmas time.

  • Ok because I was looking and I was like he has the same pattern so what am I missing. I would like a snowflake. Maybe I will get lucky.
  • This is what homozygous snowflake looks like. In heterozygous form it can't be seen.

  • Is there away for me to breed for it or would I have to breed to a homozygous snowflake and is that even possible with the snowflake.
  • To know for sure if a horse carries it yes you would have to breed to a homozygous snowflake. Or put the gene on a foundation if it does come out around Christmas. What do you mean by is it possible with snowflake? Like is it allowed? Yeah its not an exclusive gene like Axiom or Ice9 and 10. At least not right now. But there arent many people who have homozygous Snowflake at least by looking at the breeders club.
  • @best_friend Your odds of randomly breeding a snowflake (SnSn Lp) are extremely low. It may be created randomly like DP, but unlike DP it's invisible when heterozygous (and I've never seen a randomly created black chestnut). So if you create 30 foundation appaloosas, one may be a carrier (Snsn), but how will you find out which one that is? Test breeding without a homozygous (SnSn) stallion is almost implausible. If I were you I'd plan on buying the gene this christmas - that's what I plan to do!

This is what snowflake looks like on a foal - it's not obvious at first, but there are tiny white flecks that get progressively larger as the horse ages. And he happens to not carry PATN at all.

It's noticeably different form the color you sometimes from roan,

Or regular varnish marks. This filly will likely turn lighter and lighter from varnish, but it looks more like light, irregular roaning than the distinct white flecks from snowflake.

  • I wonder how much it will cost. I am thinking about buying it.
  • Just a heads up a horse has to have Appaloosa AND be homozygous for snowflake (2 copies of the snowflake gene for it to show. So if you buy it make sure you buy two copies and put it on an Appaloosa horse.

The patn gene controls the blanket size of your appaloosas.
