What Mare Paper Level Do You Expect?
-
So I've got a handle on what to expect my stallions to paper each generation to consider them good quality, I'm not sure on my mares though. I've papered everyone with three foals and it's solid red papers from foundation to 4th Gen. My first blue appears in 5th gen. Is that what I should expect?SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I am very far from the strictest culler of mares. In fact I have only 3 Blue papered mares in my stable at the moment. One is 5th gen, one is 6th gen, and one is 3rd gen. The last is the result of 2 generations of pasture breeding, I suspect. The others were all manually bred throughout the history of their lines.
Now that SMA has been made even stricter, that may eventually improve, but it will take a while.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I seldom, if ever, paper my mares. I'm pretty strict about culling anyway, but might get more into it further down the line.

My foundations must be red. I start getting blues at gen 2, would like all blues at gen 3 and am aiming for golds at gen 5, but those are all eventual goals. Right now I won't cull a mare that papers low with an AFPT over my cut off for that generation.

I have 4 Gold papered mares. I have had them since they had their 3rd foal. They are 5th, 7th, 8th, and 9th gens. I have 78 Blue papered mares. starting with 2 - 3rd gen mares. Both from my Cuyamaca line. They then go on up to 8th gens. I have always bred manually. I don 't use pasture bonus for breeding, because I prefer the show bonus each week at first, and then each night. I was still getting good PT foals from those mares up to this season from manual breeding.

I mostly expect the same as I do for my stallions, although I am a bit more lenient. So I mostly only keep blue papered at 3rd gen unless colours I'm trying to breed in. Fourth gen they have to be blue. Fifth gen I like to see a few gold appear and they have to be Gold by gen6

Thanks guys, I have a better idea what goal to work towards now.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I always have too many horses, so say if I paper 10 gen3 mares and there are 2 blues, and 8 reds, then spaying the reds is a good way to get the numbers down and to just keep breeding the blues, and the unpapered mares!
