I bred to this lovely boy (again) http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=307185
He is a freaky Friday stud and is DP DP by defualt. I bred several of my ladies to him and would like someone a bit more experienced in DP to give them a look. I'm going to include my last seasons colt just to get a second option on him as well.
I'll start with the 2 year old. I belive he's DPDP with stysty?
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=529782
His full blooded sister, she came back as brown frame with stysty but she's so dark I'm thinking 2 copies of DP as well
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=547515
This kid is also brown splash frame with stysty but not as dark so I was thinking maybe one copy DP?
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=547516
Also brown but one copy of sty I think she's only got one copy of DP as well

Hey Color!
So your stallion, Bizarre Individual is DP DP Ssty Ssty. This means that every single one of his offspring will be DP _ Ssty _. The foals' mothers will contribute the other allele at each gene locus, just like in every other animal that reproduces in this manner. So you know every single one of his foals is at least heterozygous for DP.
The mother of your two year old colt and of Odd Sky is also a Freaky Friday rank special (she has the tattoo), so you know she is also DP DP Ssty Ssty. Which means every single one of her offspring will be _ DP _ Ssty (conventionally the allele contributed from the sire line is written first and the allele contributed by the dam line is written second. This can also help when reading the color test results of a foal from non-color tested parents).
This pairing will always result in a foal that is DP DP Ssty Ssty.
Your second colt, Outlandish Magic Trick, is from a rank special Wet N Wild mare who is Ssty Ssty. Now, we happen to know that Wet N Wilds are wild bays and that homozygous sooty wild bays are dark chocolate in color while DP wild bays are blood red. Your mare is dark chocolate, not blood red, so you know she doesn't carry DP. Therefore this colt is DP dp Ssty Ssty.
Your final filly is from a plain black regular create mare. This means she could be hiding DP since it doesnt show on black horses. So this is where the detective work actually does come into play. I have briefly looked at her 8 foals and none of them looks darker than I think they should be--certainly there are no unexplained livers or something like that. So I suspect that mare is dp dp S S, or "bright" coloration. Her filly is therefore DP dp Ssty S and as such slightly lighter brown than Outlandish Magic Trick.

Excellent explanation, Cheers!

Fantastic! I never knew the sire's contributed allele came first and then the moyher's. Seems I got most of my guesses right though. The first 2 Colts were easy I already knew the freaky Friday pair would create DP DP stysty, but I thought better have a second opinion just in case I missed something.
The in depth explanation really helped! Especially for the last two babes. Thanks so much for looking so closely at my foals for me----
