11 stallions?
  • How does one decide on which ones to keep? I am puzzled because I like them all for different reasons.
  • You could do the comparison testing. I am not sure if that is for upgraded players or not. If not, try papering the stallions, and go from there.
  • Is there a certain scale that I should be looking for? I know a B grade for foundation's but what about lined horses? Also I have a 3g stallion what should he paper at?
  • Comparison testing is very expensive unless you have the Premium Upgrade--8,000 hbs compared to 4,000.

Papering them is more affordable. 1,500 hbs. This works fairly well to sort out those that will paper B as opposed to C, or A as opposed to B.

However, there is enough range in the paper levels that it is possible for the Comparison Test to judge between a colt that has a breeding ability just high enough to paper B instead of C and a colt with breeding ability just a tad short of allowing him to paper A. If you compare these two colts, the second will test superior to the first.

One solution is to try breeding as many as you can afford to. It might take a several game years, but eventually, you may see a difference in their Average Foal PT scores (AFPT). Then you can geld the B papered ones with the lowest AFPTs and keep using the ones with the higher AFPTs. Bear in mind that the breeding ability of the mares contributes to the quality of the foals, and that the range of possible PT scores is fairly wide.

A player did an experiment crossing perfect foundations once, mares and stallions with a breeding score of 100%, as high as foundations go. The resulting foal PTs ranged from 8.9 to 10.4! So trying to determine which stallion is better can take a LOT of foals.

I would suggest that you use the comparison test sparingly until your stable grows large enough to make using it more liberally affordable. This can take a while, so have patience and just enjoy seeing what kind of foals you get each game year.

  • I papered my 3G stud he only came out B papered. I think I will hold on to him for the time being and my C papered stud I am going to geld but everyone else is B papered.
  • In this game, the highest any foundation stallion papers is C. Personally, I geld any 2nd gen stallion that does not paper B. I use the comparison test in the 3rd gen to compare the sons of a given stallion. I keep only the B papered 3rd gen son(s) that comparison test superior to other B papered sons or their sire. Once I have a 3rd gen from one stallion that papers A, then I geld all that paper B or that have papered B.

I don't usually compare stallions from one line with stallions from another, but I'm not one of the strictest breeders around. *G* Some players are a lot more strict about what they keep intact.

  • I'm one of the super strict breeders, but I have a massive show string to fund my testing addiction...

Like the others have said, Foundations paper C (except in one special case when a boosted rank special Bring Back The Sun herd helper was released many many years ago--you will still see these B papered foundation stallions or their clones in many pedigrees). I try to only use perfect foundation or rank special stallions, plus I hoard perfect foundation and rank special mares, so I try to start my herd from the best foundations there are.

My gen 2s must paper high B, almost A. This means they must pass 2 comparison tests. My Nexus line is lagging behind here, with only a mid B stallion...but the instant I get a boy that is better I will geld the inferior stallion.

My gen 3s and 4s are both As, but the gen 3s must compare higher than a known low A and my gen 4s are just now starting to compare as better than my gen 3 stallions.

Papering and comparing really strictly means you cull a ton of colts. It gets really frustrating when the beauties don't make the grade and the plain Janes are top of the pops....but I know that my lines will benefit from my strictness long term.

That said, it's not the funnest possible way to play and I definitely do get frustrated and also overwhelmed because I put such a large number of foals on the ground each season...the way I breed is exactly the reason that the Thoroughbred industry has so many problems with "waste" foals.....

There is absolutely no right or wrong way to do this. Breed your favorite colors. Breed one stallion/generation/year to see if you like the colors they produce better. I really don't think you can go wrong as long as you free test everything!
  • Cheers, are you admitting to being a pony mill?! ;P

  • I don't think that Cheers will confirm or deny that. She is just playing the game like every one else. ;;)
  • If I bred in real life the way I breed pixel ponies, I would have to report myself to an animal welfare organization!!! I keep thinking about creating a second account as a rescue,,,but I don't have time to play two accounts!

  • Yea. Look at your generations, and how many mares/fillies you have and how many you can guesstimate keeping in the next few years. I currently have 15 in my stud barn and three intact stallions in my Show barn. So many pretty Colts... Part of me is surprised I have so few.
  • And cheers, part if me wishes I could be a rescue too... and then I think of all the horses I have in auction right now... all to get 3 nice fillies without increasing my keeping foundation mare population. -_-
  • I have tried a couple of times to do a rescue on this game and on WHG/Shoco. It never worked out. WAY more work than it was worth. My best friend is CONSTANTLY asking me how many horses I have, and then calling me a horse miller, so I thought I would share the joy! :P
