Are there any mares i could breed to him for cheap?
  • What sort of things would you like to see in your foal? Are you after a specific color? Do you want to stay with just riding horses? Do you want to buy the mare, or just do a breeding? So many questions, so many mares out there!! :p

  • Possibly buy, or just breed
  • Well, he's a 2nd generation colt that papered mid-high B (just below my best of pasture colts). Your best chance at getting intact foals is to use 2g mares that have passed MA, or SMA if possible. If I'm looking at a horse I might breed to or buy, I like to see high paper levels (relative to generation) in their parents. Papering stallions is pretty standard, so that's easier to judge by - C is my cutoff for outside foundations, B for 2g, A for 3g. For a 2nd gen like Jona you might also look for mares with rank special parents - that way you know they're from top quality stock.

If you'd like liver chestnuts like him, try mares that carry sooty, preferably Ssty Ssty. DP (rare, hidden gene) and S+ (only available through purchase in the GMT lab) much rarer to come across, as most people guard their lines closely. All three contribute to the darkening of red pigment in a horse's coat, and a total of at least three in any combination (ex: Ssty Ssty DP dp, Ssty S DP DP, S+ Ssty DP dp, S+ S+ dp DP, etc.) are required for a horse to be considered liver. A horse with 4 (ex: Ssty Ssty DP DP) will be extremely dark.

You can search for mares available to the public for breeding and/or through the Search Horses function. You may also decide to acquire a foundation horse or two and breed your own 2g mares to use in the future. Although there are no restrictions on breeding unlike generations together (it's actually a common way to produce show horses), many members prefer even pedigrees, and it's much easier to get intact offspring from an even breeding. Just keep in mind that how you breed/how strict your standards for breeding stock are may affect your % spayed/gelded and the marketability of your resulting horses to other members.

    Happy breeding!
